Mario Party Superstars is out now on the Nintendo eShop for the Nintendo Switch. With the new entry in the series, many fans were curious if Superstars would follow the path of its predecessor Super Mario Party and integrate motion controls into the game or if Superstars would stick with the classics and not include the feature. So the question is…

Does Mario Party Superstars have motion controls?

Mario Party Superstars does not have motion controls.

Now, although I am no Nintendo insider, I do have some ideas as to why Nintendo opted to remove motion controls from Mario Party Superstars.

For starters, if you read our “Every Mario Party Superstars Minigame” article, you would know that Superstars features 100 minigames from previous entries in the franchise.

Because previous games in the series were on consoles that didn’t have motion controls it didn’t make sense for Nintendo to risk losing what made these classic minigames great just to add on to the Switch’s gimmick.

Also, over the past few months, Nintendo has been pushing their new cheaper alternative to the Nintendo Switch, the Switch Lite console to reach a new category of gamers.

To keep the Switch Lite cheap Nintendo had to scrap several features from the original Switch, including the ability to dock the Switch into your TV, removable joycons, and most importantly for this article: motion control.

It would be a massive blow to the Lite if Superstars: a new release from one of Nintendo’s most popular franchises, couldn’t be played on the console.

Above all else, Superstar’s predecessor: Super Mario Party, was criticized by some fans for limiting how fans could play the game.

For a game on a console marketed with its mobility and flexibility in mind, it sure didn’t help that Super Mario Party could only be playable when plugged into your TV or in tabletop mode.

It appears that Nintendo has solved this issue by removing motion controls altogether to remove the need to remove the joycons.
