Is Terraria Cross-Platform? Crossplay details for Mobile, Consoles and PC

Terraria is a hugely popular CO-OP game, prompting us to ask can you play with friends on different platforms via Cross-platform support? Does Terraria have Crossplay for iOS and Android mobile systems? Or among console platforms such as Xbox, Playstation, Switch and PC?

Is Terraria Cross-Platform for all platforms?

Terraria does have a Crossplay option available but is largely not a Cross-Platform game. The only systems with Cross-Platform capabilities are the mobile versions of the game, iOS and Android, which can play with each other.

Other systems do not have this capability, so Terraria is for the majority, not a Cross-Platform capable title.

Different versions of the same family of consoles however do have the capacity to play together, which is a feature known as Cross-generation rather than Crossplay. This allows players on a PS4 to play together with someone on a PS5, or Xbox One with Xbox Series X.

How to enable Crossplay with iOS and Android

Crossplay between iOS and Android requires no additional work and is allowed by default – there are no extra steps to worry about!

Why doesn’t Terraria support more Crossplay options?

Terraria has had many updates over the years, and various builds of the game exist on different platforms.

While it’s very compact for its size in terms of actual hard drive space used, Terraria can use a lot of processing power just due to how much is going on on the screen. This means that subjecting say, an Android Phone to the insanity that is late game hardmode Terraria on PC probably won’t result in the best performance.

Additionally, given the games focus on progression through a series of bosses and different areas of the world with increasingly dangerous biomes, there is a level of precise control required. This is another area where it’s hard to get the mobile version to parity with the likes of PC and to a lesser extent console.

As things stand, Terraria has different versions of the game available on differing systems, with Desktop, Consoles, Mobile and 3DS each having a distinct version of the game to themselves.

These versions are incapable in any capacity of playing with each other, as they are effectively different games due to being different game builds. It would be nice to see Crossplay extend to allow all Console versions of the game to match with each other though, as both Xbox and Playstation are running the same version of the game but seemingly only support internal cross-generational play at the moment.
