Is Splitgate a free-to-play game?

Splitgate had a huge popularity spike in the last year; but for those wanting to try it, is it free or do you need to buy Splitgate?

Is Splitgate a free game?

Splitgate is a free-to-play arena shooter available on Steam, as well as Playstation and Xbox series consoles. Downloading and playing the base game is totally, 100% free, and comes with a variety of matchmaking game modes and crossplay support across the different versions of the game mentioned above.

Not everything in Splitgate is available for free, however; the game does feature a battle pass system where the majority of rewards require you to have purchased the premium battle pass.

Splitgate also features premium cosmetics, which are purchased using a premium in-game currency that is bought with real money, or earned slowly through gameplay, such as through some free battle pass rewards, and for each consecutive week of logins.

Still this shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone playing pretty much any modern free-to-play multiplayer game; this is pretty much the standard model lately. Halo Infinite, Fortnite and others use very similar systems to make a profit while still allowing you to play Multiplayer for free.

Cosmetics can also be earned through some battle pass levels or completing challenges through a randomised loot box system; it’ll likely require a fair few attempts before you get something you like though, as this loot box system has plenty of very plain rewards in it as filler that you’ll probably not use for very long.

All in all, this means Splitgate is about what you’d expect from a competitive multiplayer free-to-play game. You get to play the game in its totality for free, but looking good inside the game while you do that? That’s extra.

Splitcoin is the premium currency of choice in Splitgate, and can be bought for real money in the in-game store, for those of you looking to get a swankier player character as fast as possible.
