The Pokemon Company Profits Hit New High in 2020

Pokemon First Generation starters.

Pokemon was already a juggernaut of a franchise not only in the gaming world, but the world as a whole, but 2020 had the series continue to grow to unprecedented heights. Despite COVID-19 generally causing delays in games studios and such, the Pokemon Company profits are the highest they’ve ever been with a net profit of over $170 million according to the Offical Gazette.

The reception of the main series Pokemon games may be in a little bit of a rut comparative to the late 2000s with Sword and Shield’s incomplete Pokedex and the Diamond and Pearl remakes looking more faithful than players may even want. Evidently, though, this means little with The Pokemon Company growing as it is.

(If there are still people who think Pokémon Go is dead, I believe this is the best demonstration to the contrary.)

Perhaps this may not be TOO surprising, as Pokemon has seen a comparatively good year all things considered. In the games department, Sword and Shield released two DLC packs that fans seem to have enjoyed. One of the most notable players, though, may be Pokemon GO.

In 2020 alone, Pokemon GO had over $1 billion in player purchases, making it the best year yet for the app. The pandemic definitely hit everyone in some way, but Niantic did everything it could to make the game stay fun despite being inside through the use of increased spawns, Remote Raid Passes, and a metric ton of events throughout the year.

This year looks bright as well for The Pokemon Company profits. By the end of the fiscal year, both the Gen 4 remakes Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, as well as Pokemon Legends: Arceus will have released. New Pokemon Snap came out not long ago to fan acclaim as well and I guess Pokemon card hunts are a thing now? Let’s see if the series can keep it’s momentum!
