The newest entry in the Pokémon series, Pokémon Unite, will be getting its first official tournament by Nintendo. The MOBA title has a highly competitive nature, so it was just a matter of time until this announcement came.

This first tournament will be exclusive for Japan, and players can subscribe through the official Pokémon Unite Japanese site. In order to participate, players must be 16 years or older and have knowledge of the Japanese language.

If the participant is younger than 21, they also need their legal guardian’s approval in order to participate.

The tournament will have up to 256 teams registered, and winners will be decided in single matches, with the exception of the semifinals and finals, when the tournament enters in a Bo3 phase.

The matches will be Standard Battles disputed on the Remoat Stadium map. The tournament is destined for the Nintendo Switch port of the game, currently the only one available.

With the release of the mobile version ahead, the player base will receive a huge boost, and we might be seeing more and more tournaments surfacing, hopefully outside of Japan. An esports scenario for Pokémon Unite might be starting to take form right now.

Pokémon Unite is the new approach of the series, this time going for a MOBA-style game. You control different Pokémons, each one with unique skills based on movements from other games, while your team fights for the map objectives, which goes from capturing wild Pokémon to simply defeating your opponents.
