Pokemon: Five things you didn’t know about Ash’s Tauros

Tauros in the Pokemon anime

Many Pokemon fans know that there’s a small horde of Tauros Ash owns, but did you know about these little details about them?

The many Tauros Ash owns in the Pokemon anime

The Tauros were caught in the banned episode EP035, where Ash and friends entered the Safari zone and every single attempt to catch a Pokemon Ash made was thwarted by a new Tauros each time.

That said, there are a few things about them that some Pokemon fans may simply not know or just not have realised yet, so let’s get into the list.

1 – The only Pokemon caught in an Internationally banned episode

Each and every one of the Tauros Ash owns, (including the one that technically belongs to Brock) has the shared but unique accolade of being the only Pokemon caught by one of the main characters in an episode that is internationally banned.

It’s a bit difficult to classify as Unique, given there are thirty of them, but these Tauros are the only ones to have it and do typically appear as a horde. I suppose that means they qualify?

2 – Ash turned down a Rhyhorn

In the episode, Ash actually tried to capture a Rhyhorn during his Safari zone tour. Ash was offered a Rhyhorn for one of his Tauros later, after winning a competition using it.

Despite having attempted to capture a Rhyhorn earlier, Ash actually turns this trade down – which is a pretty strong show of loyalty for a Trainer who accidentally caught thirty of these Pokemon.

3 – They’re his only one-hit KO capable Pokemon so far

Despite all of the many, many episodes of the Anime, and the far fewer but still respectable total of Pokemon Ash has caught over the years, these Tauros remain the only Pokemon he’s ever owned that are capable of (and have actually used) a one-hit KO move.

This begs the question, really – he has 30 of them, when can we expect him to make use of their endless devotion to him and deploy 30 one-hit KO’s simultaneously to defeat Team Rocket? It only takes one trip to the Pokemon Centre afterwards and they’re ready to go again after all.

4 – We don’t know if its the same Tauros

Each time Professor Oak has sent a Tauros to Ash, we’ve never actually had it be confirmed or even mentioned if its the same Tauros or a different one. This is a small detail that’s actually quite amusing to think about.

Logically, you’d expect it to be random – I mean there are thirty of them, give them each a chance, right?

This conjures up the rather amusing imagery of Oak holding a quick lottery event to see which Tauros gets to go see Ash whenever he needs one of them, with the large bull Pokemon, gathered around waiting in anticipation to find out who won this time.

5 – Tauros Encounter chance was changed because of the episode

In reference to the episode where Ash caught so many Tauros, the encounter chance of Tauros in the Safari Zone for Pokemon Yellow was made 10% instead of the rate present in the other games, having 1% or 4% respectively between Red and Blue or FireRed and LeafGreen.

Although if Pokemon Yellow was to be made totally accurate, that chance should really have been tuned to 100%.

Is there anything else?

That’s it for this list, did you know all of these little bits before, or was this all a surprise to you?

Personally I’m looking forward to the episode where we finally get to the see the true power of 30 Tauros deploying one-hit KO moves at once, presumably absolutely destroying the Elite four or most Gyms in the process.
