EXP Share is one of the most controversial features in Pokemon – It’s back in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl and some people aren’t happy. It’s as useful as it is a hindrance and we have everything you need to know about how you can turn off EXP Share in these Generation 4 remakes.

What is the EXP Share feature?

EXP Share is a feature that’s undergone a slight change over the last few generations of Pokemon games and it’s gone from a held item to an integral feature that’s left many with a bitter taste in their mouths.

EXP Share is a feature that shares all the EXP earned in Pokemon battles with your Pokemon party. For the most part, you can go through large portions of the newer Pokemon games with your Starter Pokemon without the worry that your other party members are being left behind. As you can imagine, this is both a fantastic feature and something that takes away from the difficulty Pokemon games once had.

If you want to turn off EXP Share, you’re out of luck. You can’t toggle this feature in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Pokemon Shining Pearl – it’s gone from an optional item to a core feature of gameplay. This was introduced in Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield and its inclusion in the Generation 4 remakes has only driven more fans to criticise it, given the fact that it wasn’t a feature available in the original releases.

The only option you have to avoid EXP Share is to stow all the Pokemon in your party you’re not using – so there’s simply not any Pokemon available to have any earned EXP to be shared with. This won’t increase the amount of EXP your active Pokemon battler earns, though – So… It’s a little pointless.
