Pokemon BDSP: How to get Fishing Rod

Fishing has always been a part of Pokemon games and Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Pokemon Shining Pearl have brought back this classic mechanic in its best iteration yet. If you want to get a Fishing Rod in either of these games, you’re going to need to progress a little in-game. Here’s who you need to talk to if you want to get your hands on your first Fishing Rod…

How to get a Fishing Rod in Pokemon

The first Fishing Rod you can get in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Pokemon Shining Pearl is the Old Rod – It doesn’t sound too flashy, but it does the job.

You can get your hands on this bit of equipment on your way to Jubilife City, on Route 218. This is the first place you’ll find yourself after picking up the Sinnoh region Pokedex from Professor Rowan in Sandgem Town.

If you’re heading towards Jubilife City, you’ll come across a mid-point building on Route 218 with a Fisherman inside. All you need to do is talk to the Fisherman inside this building and select “Yes” in the conversation to get your hands on the Old Rod.

As this is the first Fishing Rod you’re going to get your hands on, you might find that you can’t get your hands on the full variety of Pokemon available in the waters of the Sinnoh region. You’ll also be able to encounter lower level Pokemon with your Old Rod.

It’s hard to put together a full list of the Pokemon you can catch with an Old Rod specifically – Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl do everything with percentages and odds. You’ll be seeing quite a few Magikarp and Tentacool with your Old Rod – but other Pokemon will still have a chance of showing up… It’ll just be a lower chance.
