Even though we can expect Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl (BDSP) to be faithful remakes, it would also not be surprising to see many new features as has been the case in previous remakes of older Pokemon titles.

There are plenty of new and returning features we would love to see in Pokemon BDSP.

Pokemon is a franchise that has elicited massive support from its fans throughout its decades-long reign over the monster-collecting genre.

The series has seen dozens of mainline titles and more merchandising than there are even Pokemon to merchandise, but that certainly hasn’t stopped fans from radiating excitement over the reveal of the long-requested remakes of the generation 4 titles, Pokemon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum, as well as speculating on what sorts of features we can expect to see.

Regional variants

What was arguably the most exciting thing to come out of Pokemon Sun and Moon was the addition of regional variants.

The idea that by being exposed to an environment outside of their native one, some Pokemon would adapt and change in appearance and type is something that was not only fascinating from a gameplay perspective but also something grounded in actual biology.

Regional Variants not only increase the diversity of competitive play but also adds depth to the region at large by making it feel much more alive.

Mega-Evolution

A favorite, Mega-Evolution took the competitive scene by storm and left a lasting impression on players.

First introduced in Pokemon X and Y, Mega-Evolution allowed some pokemon to take on a more powerful form that would not only adjust their stats but would also sometimes change the Pokemon’s stats or ability to something totally different.

This gave a lot of pokemon that weren’t competitively viable the means to stand out among their peers becoming the core of the competitive meta.

Mega-Evolutions appeared recently in the gen 1 reboot games, Pokemon Let’s Go Pikachu and Let’s Go Eevee, so some fans believe that Mega-Evolution could always come back and there are plenty of Sinnoh Pokemon who could benefit from one.

Ultra-Beasts (or a Distortion World equivalent)

As Pokemon established itself as a multiverse with multiple timelines and dimensions where events happen differently or not at all in some cases, one of the more interesting examples of the implications of a broader universe entails is the Ultra Beasts.

The Ultra Beasts are interdimensional parallels to Pokemon first introduced in Pokemon Sun and Moon and are both exceptionally powerful and incredibly bizarre-looking.

Due to the nature of Ultra Wormholes, they could theoretically appear anywhere that Necrozma or Cosmog and its evolutions appear so it would not be unthinkable for Ultra Beasts to appear.

Most interestingly though, Pokemon Platinum introduced the Distortion World. This was an alternate dimension where the legendary renegade Pokemon, Giratina was forced to live.

As far as new Pokemon BDSP features are concerned, the idea of creatures living and developing in such a place in the same way that Ultra Beasts did in Ultra Space would be an awesome concept to expand upon.

A Revamped Battle Zone

Post-game content has been a slightly contentious issue for some players. The different Pokemon games have had different levels of post-game content that many players have either found engaging or disliked for different reasons. Pokemon Diamond and Pearls post-game was the battle zone which contained new story content, new pokemon, and challenging battles.

The remakes of Diamond and Pearl could very easily expand upon what the battle zone offers by increasing its replayability in a more engaging way than the previous games have.

Of all the possible new Pokemon BDSP features this feels the most likely.

Even though BDSP is supposed to be a faithful remake, with so many new Pokemon added since their original release it would be a shame not to see an expanded Pokedex

. Pokemon is all about the monsters themselves, so why not pack this sucker up with as many Pokemon as we can?

Players were upset about the initial lack of the National Dex is Pokemon Sword and Shield, and while the DLC certainly remedied some of that situation, the best way to avoid that sort of backlash would be to simply allow the remakes to support transferring Pokemon to and from Pokemon Home. And then there will finally be more fire-types in Sinnoh!

The generation 4 remakes are expected to be released in late 2021. Keep a lookout later this year for more new Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl news up until its release!
