The Champion System in Marvel’s Avengers explained

The new Champion System that’s coming to Marvel’s Avengers might seem confusing, but we have everything you need to know about it right here.

If you’re an avid Avenger, you might find yourself reaching max level on one (or more) of your characters in Crystal Dynamics’ Avengers game. Once you hit this level, XP becomes pretty obsolete and there’s almost no real progression. Sure, you can go for better loot but this can take a really long time. Does anyone really want to be grinding out that many hours of gameplay for a new ISO-8?

For those who have invested a lot of time into the game, there have been cries for better progression systems. Other looter shooters periodically increase the Max Level, so why hasn’t Marvel’s Avengers yet?

We can’t answer that, but Crystal Dynamics has been listening and there’s a new post-max level Champion System coming to Marvel’s Avengers that’s going to make it worth grinding again. For a while, anyway.

At the moment, there’s not really anywhere to go with your Marvel’s Avengers character when it hits the level cap. The gear system is robust, but actually earning gear that’s better is often rare. It’s not the most rewarding looting mechanics you’ve ever seen, but it does make landing that better bit of equipment all the more exciting.

Still, when you hit this level you’ve pretty much unlocked everything there is to unlock with your character and the changes new gear does make are often minor.

Thankfully, Crystal Dynamics has a plan to keep their Avengers game going for a little while yet. They’re adding a new Champion System to Marvel’s Avengers and it’s essentially a new post-max level progression system.

When the update goes live, all XP earned past level 50 will be converted into Champion XP that is used to increase your Champion Level. When you level this up, you’ll get a Champion Skill Point which can be spent on a Champion Skill.

” Champion Skills are on their own separate interface and take the form of boosts to your damage, Perk chance activation, Heroic charge rate, etc. These are permanent increases, so every Champion Skill matters!”

As you can see in the image below, Champion Skills are all about ability boosts and character buffs. If you want to make your Main even tougher, this is the way to do it.

There isn’t going to be a “Re-Spec” feature for Champion Skills at launch, so you’ll need to be careful with what you spend your Champion Skill Point on. Crystal Dynamics is also introducing a Double XP system, which they’re calling “Hero Catalysts” to help everyone catch up!
