It came as a huge surprise when Capcom and GOG dropped the Resident Evil trilogy bundle out of nowhere after the community had been begging the publisher for years to bring the games back. Initially, only the original 1996 Resident Evil game was available to download, with plans to release the remaining two entries throughout the rest of the year.

It has now been two months and we have finally gotten news regarding the release of the next entry, and in my opinion the best title in the entire series, Resident Evil 2.

Resident Evil 2 follows Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield as they find themselves walking into the zombie apocalypse and must escape Raccoon City across four different scenarios. This entry also introduced iconic characters including Ada and Sherry to the series, along with villains including William Birking and the terrifying Mr. X.

GOG took to X to announce that the next entry in the trilogy, Resident Evil 2, is set to be released on August 27th. This will be followed by the conclusion of the Raccoon City story with Resident Evil 3 before the end of 2024.

Although this version of Resident Evil 2 isn’t based on the best version of the game, instead it is the Windows 98 port, this is the easiest way to play the game in 2024 due to it running right out of the box without the need for third-party patches. However, if you want to improve your gameplay experience, I highly recommend installing the Rebirth patch.

You can also install the Seamless HD mod if you want to boost the visuals in the game, as the compressed pre-rendered backgrounds certainly show their age by modern 4K standards. And if you want to squeeze some more mileage out of the classic Resident Evil trilogy, BioRand adds a randomizer to the games. The team has also released a new update today that includes many iconic women from the franchise including Helena and the Dimitrescu Daughters from Resident Evil Village.

The BioRand website also has a download for everything I’ve just mentioned in one package, making it the most accessible way to improve the classic games.

Reliving these classic games will keep Resident Evil fans going for a while as much of the community eagerly awaits news of the upcoming Resident Evil 9, which leaks suggest could be revealed later this year with a potential 2025 or 2026 release date. The project was recently mentioned during an interview, teasing players with what the team has been working on over the past few years. It will be interesting to see how the story continues now that the Winters’ story has ended after only two games rather than extending to the full trilogy.
