DBFZ Patch Notes: System Changes and Full Rebalancing!

DBFZ Goku Black

It’s been a few months since the release of Super Saiyan 4 Gogeta in the hit fighting game Dragon Ball Fighterz and fans had wondered just what the fate of the game would be after the final DLC character. Arc System Works announced a showcase of a new patch in the past week, and notable players and commentators gave fans a rundown of all the changes with examples. Here’s everything you need to know about the DBFZ Patch Notes!

As a disclaimer, I won’t be listing every change verbatim, but offering highlights and linking to a compilation of the official notes if you want to see all the juicy details.

DBFZ Patch Notes: System Changes

With this patch came an unnaturally long set of overall system changes. It dwarfs pretty much any other update aside from maybe some fixes through Seasons 1 and 2 of the game. Unfortunately, the long requested rollback netcode is not one of the changes, but ArcSys has acknowledged the demand. I’d be amazed were it not included in a potential sequel game.

Generally speaking, the major system changes are to Z Changing (character swapping), Ki Charge, and movement. The biggest change in the entire patch, though, is definitely the additions to Z Change. Seemingly any special move can be cancelled into a Z Change which ensures a follow up combo. This allows for combo extensions which can be the difference between a character going down or not. Also, it’s just pretty cool seeing swaps so often now.

Ki Charge has been massively buffed so as to not be, well, useless anymore. It used to be a fully unsafe option to build meter, but adding startup invincibility, more ways to get into charge, and giving you a crazy grab option out of it allows for a lot more creativity. Other changes also made meter gain quicker through changes to Ki scaling.

The usual assists, supers, and vanish have been tweaked as usual, but an interesting addition was that of instant super jumps and easier floats. While the floats only apply to those with teleport specials, these changes still ultimately make mobility better and easier to perform for players.

Next up, I’ll take a look at some of the highlights of the character rebalancing, as nearly every single character in the game was buffed to oblivion.

DBFZ Patch Notes: Character Balancing

It was once said that in a world where everyone is super, no one is. Clearly this was the guiding philosophy of this patch as the entire roster has been buffed to insane proportions with new combo routes, faster frame data, and larger hitboxes all around. Specific characters have even had mechanical changes like added level 4 supers and reverse beats.

While everyone was made better (except Gotenks who was kiiinda too broken according to most top players), there are clear winners here. Adult Gohan, Frieza, Goku Black, Zamasu, Nappa, SS1 Goku, and Hit all either had two full pages of notes or drastic buffs.

Among the other general changes to the entire cast, Adult Gohan had his Potential Unleashed mechanic reworked to be notably better. His gimmick is to spend meter to become stronger throughout the fight, but changes since Season 1 have left Adult Gohan in something of an odd spot. It generally wasn’t considered worth it to power him up that much. The only real benefits were Level 1 and Level 7. The latter had a mechanic called reverse beat which can change combo flow.

With the new changes, Gohan receives this at Level 5. Additionally, he gains a double air dash at Level 3 and the ability to cancel any special into another at Level 7. This is the kind of potential that needed unleashing.

Frieza received changes to Golden Frieza which makes the character much better in practice. While Golden Frieza was a good install super, its timer left something to be desired, especially since you were wide open after it ran out. Now, the timer for Golden Frieza is reset any time Frieza switches out of point position or takes down the opponent’s point character. In practicality, this means that Golden Frieza may as well be permanent and be much more worth the hefty cost.

Fused Zamazu received changes to his flight mechanic which make him move faster, stay afloat longer, and added options during flight to make it much more centralizing to the character’s kit. With a new teleport and the ability to cancel into a full screen projectile, Zamasu has become an evasive mix-up machine.

Other winners like Goku, Goku Black, Nappa, and Hit merely had a good amount of changes which reverted themselves to pre nerfed days or simply had such a number of changes that their entire kit was basically made better.
