Monsters are ramping outside of Kamura Village putting everyone at risk, and it’s your job to help deal with them! Luckily, you have a variety of tools that makes the disposal of the monsters as easy as eating Bunny Dango.

The simplest way to deal with any brutish beast giving your village a hard time is to simply bonk ’em on the head until they’re dead! But another, potentially more rewarding avenue of monster removal is to capture them instead.

How to Capture

Capturing monsters requires a little bit more prep work than a standard “Slay the Monster” quest. In order to capture a monster, you’ll need to make sure to have a few items in your inventory going in, including traps and tranquilizer bombs.

There are two types of traps in Monster Hunter: Rise, the Shock Trap, and the Pitfall Trap. Shock Traps temporarily paralyze the monster that steps into it and is made by gathering Thunderbugs and combining one with a Trap Tool which can be purchased from the shop in Kamura Village.

Pitfall traps cause the monster to plummet into a small pit and require slightly more materials to make than the Shock Trap. Pitfall Traps require not only a Trap Tool, but also a Net which must be crafted from Ivy and Spider Web.

The final item needed is a Tranq Bomb, which can be crafted by combining Sleep Herb with Parashrooms. Once you have all of these items all you’ll have to do next is weaken your target monster until it’s close to being slain, lay down a trap in the monster’s path, and once the trap is sprung, use Tranq Bombs until the monster has been captured. Easy as 1-2-3!

Why Capture Monsters?

After reading through the list of materials and items needed to capture a monster, you may be thinking, “Well, what’s the point?

My Dual-Blades CRAVE violence as the demon overcomes me!” I see your unquenchable bloodlust and I say to you, “what about better loot?”

That’s right, capturing monsters in Monster Hunter: Rise will typically increase the drop rates for some monster parts. For the best rewards, it is good to break as many parts as possible and then capture the monster in most cases.

However there are some parts that are only obtainable from carving a slain monster, so be sure to check your Hunters Notes for specific details about monster parts including whether or not they must be carved or if they can be obtained from capture.
