Age of Empires 4: How to capture Sacred Sites

Age of Empires 4 built up settlement

Age of Empires 4 is the long-awaited next entry in the series, with the game being the first new title since Age of Empires 3 that was released all the way back in 2005.

Since then, the series has laid dormant, although the first three entries did recently receive the remaster treatment to bring them in line with more modern-day graphics ahead of the release of Age of Empires 4 in October 2021.

For a long time, Age of Empires has been one of the top RTS games and is still played by many fans of the genre today.

Sacred sites are small areas in Age of Empires 4 that you can capture for rewards, so let’s talk about how to capture them.

How to capture Sacred Sites in Age of Empires 4

Sacred sites in Age of Empires 4 are quite easy to capture once you know how to do so, provided other factions aren’t actively interfering with your attempts.

To capture a sacred site, you’ll need a religious unit of some form, such as the Age of Empires series classic Monk, though different factions may use different names for them. Once you have your monk or a similar unit, select them then simply right-click on the site and let them get to work.

It might also be wise to defend them while they do their task.

If you don’t yet have a unit to use, you’ll need to train religious units.

Some factions may need to advance to the third age of the game to do this, while others such as the Holy Roman Empire can have access to them immediately at game start – quite the bonus, considering they can then capture sacred sites immediately when they find them.

What do Sacred Sites do?

Now that you’ve learned how to capture those sites, what exactly do they do for you? Well, as long as you control the sacred site, you’ll benefit from some passive gold generation. Not bad for something the HRE can do immediately.

Additionally, controlling all of the Sacred Sites can lead to a victory condition in Age of Empires 4, so keep an eye on those if your neighbor seems to be hoarding them a bit too quickly – though they will need to defend them for a while once they have them all, so don’t panic about it too much.

How long precisely they will need to defend them will vary by your game settings, but the default is 10 minutes.
