New Halo Infinite Battle Pass system – How it works

Following a deep-dive on their new free-to-play multiplayer, 343 Industries has talked a little bit about the new Halo Infinite Battle Pass system and how it works. It’s going to be a little bit different from what you see in other games.

The fact that Halo Infinite is going to have free-to-play multiplyer is pretty insane given the fact that the Halo series is arguably the most iconic IP Xbox own. That’s a lot of money they might be missing out on, right? Well… Now, the new Battle Pass system coming to Halo Infinite seems to suggest that Xbox don’t really care about making money from Halo. Monetisation and Micro-Transactions are rife in modern gaming… Could 343 Industries and Xbox be on the cusp of dismantaling that?

Halo Infinite Battle Pass – What Makes It Special?

There is one key feature of the Halo Infinite Battle Pass system that makes it special and that is the fact that it is a permanent feature. To summarise, Design Lead Chris Blohm said the following during today’s Halo Infinite Multiplayer Overview

” The Halo Battle Pass will never be taken away from you. What I mean by that is once you buy it, it’s yours and it does not expire… you’ll be able to purchase all of the old battle passes in future seasons, as well as the current one, and choose which battle pass you want to apply your progression towards.”

It still looks like there’s going to be seasonal content drops for Halo Infinite that you’ll need to purchase, but they’re not time-limited like Battle Pass systems in games like Call of Duty and Fortnite.

Of course, as you’d expect, there were also a few words reinforcing the idea that all the cosmetic items were purely cosmetic. However, we all know how that ended up with the Roze skin in Warzone… “No pay to win” always feels like a loaded phrase.

Still, Halo Infinite is trying to alter the existing Battle Pass formula to appease fans who criticise the intense monetisation of modern multiplayer games. There’s going to be a lot of people happy with these changes and we can’t think of why anyone would be explicitly unhappy.

Halo cosmetics are still going to be earned through gameplay, for the most part, but we just have to accept that 343 Industries need to make money somehow.
