When Halo fans think about the Halo Infinite map, one of the most prevailing thoughts is almost certainly “What is it going to look like?” Developers Justin Dinges, Troy Mashburn, and John Mulkey have the answer: the world is going to look like Halo.

That’s a hell of a concept, right? But it’s one that’s been a hot issue in the community for years. You see, Halo’s original developers, Bungie, created an iconic, consistent world that 343 has admitted to muddying up when they took over the series. With Halo Infinite, the team at 343 says that they’ve listened to the fans, and have brought back a classic look.

Specifically referring to the level Silent Cartographer from Halo: Combat Evolved, Mashburn says that “recapturing the feeling of this mission has been one of the inspirations behind [his] gameplay direction.” That’s fantastic news. Silent Cartographer is an excellent, fan-favourite level. (And not to brag, but it’s one we told them they should look to for inspiration before.

Detailing that the thought process behind the world’s development included focusing on features like “Legacy” and “Simplicity,” Dinges explains further that they want to take Halo “back to its roots,” and remove unnecessary design elements from the world to make it a clean, readable experience.

Called a “spiritual reboot” by the team at 343, it seems as if at least the world design and visuals are returning to their Bungie-esque days. So what does that mean for the gameplay?

We’ve already seen some short gameplay, and learned about cool new weapons and abilities. Abilities like the Grappleshot, which the design team says that map designers and gameplay designers worked on together, to seamlessly blend opportunities to use the Grappleshot in a natural way.

Apparently, the new movement options the Grappleshot provided opened a whole can of worms for the gameplay team, who found that the classic formula of entering a combat zone and taking a set path through it is complicated by the addition of the grappling hook. Players will be able to approach fights from anywhere, however they want, with whatever they want.

These new traversal options, as well as open-ended world design, get even better in co-operative play.

“When you add the idea that we can play together to that matrix of player choice driven experiences, the possibilities just explode.” says John Mulkey. Co-op players will be able to combine abilities, weapons, traversal options, and more to create amazing combos, and we for one are excited to see them.

And one more thing:

Those visuals look a lot better than the gameplay trailer.

And yes, that’s the sniper rifle being seen in game. And yes, again, that is a new weapon appearing in the HUD above the sniper.

We have a lot to look forward to when Halo Infinite releases this fall.
