It has long been rumoured that Rockstar Games are secretly remastering the classic PS2-era Grand Theft Auto games, GTA 3, Vice City, and San Andreas.

A new report by Kotaku has confirmed these rumours, with an insider telling the publication that the project has been in the works for some time, but was ultimately delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The GTA remastered trilogy will likely be released as a single collection and will make an appearance on the PlayStation 4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, as well as Google Stadia, mobile devices, and even the Nintendo Switch.

According to the new insider leaks, the GTA Remastered collection is set to launch around late October to early November and will be built using the Unreal Engine, most prominently used in games such as Fortnite.

The rumours of a Grand Theft Auto PS2 Trilogy remastered collection started spreading earlier this year after Rockstar filed numerous cease and desist orders against several graphics mods for the PC versions of Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

The mods that were targeted the most were ones that created an unofficial remaster of the game, giving players a glimpse at what an updated version of the classic titles could look like.

There have also been rumours that Rockstar Games is looking to remaster the original Red Dead Redemption which was released in 2010 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

This new remaster could finally see the game come to PC as it never saw an official release, with the only way to currently play it on PC being through using a PS3 or Xbox 360 emulator, or by using Sony’s PlayStation Now service on PC.

However, this only allows you to play the game as it was originally released 11 years ago, giving players no option to improve the graphics, frame rate, or use mods.

Rockstar Dundee is the developer in charge of the Grand Theft Auto Trilogy Remasters, the same studio behind Crackdown 2 and Crackdown 3 back when they were known as Ruffian Games.

As of this article, Rockstar Games has not officially announced the remastered collection and no footage or screenshots have been leaked, so we can’t confirm whether this new report is accurate, but Kotaku has corroborated the new leaks so it looks like an official reveal could be right around the corner.
