What is the 3.0 update size for Genshin Impact?

3.0 update size featured

The biggest enemy you can find in Genshin Impact is not a Hilichurl, the Abyss Order, or the Fatui. No, the most dreadful opponent is the game’s enormous size. we’ll soon have the Sumeru update, so how big will be the 3.0 update size? The game is infamous for having big files downloaded every time a big update arrives.

The situation is bad enough on PC, where the game currently has around 60GB in sheer size. Now imagine on mobile phones, where that amount could be half of the whole device space. While Hoyoverse manages to get the game down to 20GB, it’s still huge compared to other mobile games out there.

Tower of Fantasy, for example, consumes 12GB when fully installed. Still big for a mobile, but 8GB is no joke. If you have ever tried to manage your phone’s storage, you’ll know how important every free space can be.

Things got a little out of control for Genshin as people started to uninstall the game from their phones since they had no space left. So what would happen when this new, huge update arrives?

3.0 update size for Genshin Impact

No leaks have pointed out the actual size of the 3.0 update yet, and most values you can find out there are mostly rumors with no actual source. We can confirm that the latest updates have been between 10 to 12GB on PC and 2 to 3GB on mobile.

The 2.7 update was considerably bigger thanks to sound files being introduced, and the same can be expected with Sumeru since it will have 3 new characters and lots of story content. Some of the most pessimist expectations are for around 15 to 20GB size on PC and from 4 to 5GB on mobile. Again, nothing official.

Preload for the update will be available on August 21, when we’ll know the official 3.0 update size. Until then, be sure to get some free memory on your playing device, as the subsequent updates will probably be roughly the same size as previous ones, if not even bigger.

How to decrease Genshin’s overall size

A well-known trick on how to free some storage is to delete voiceovers from other languages. For example, if you play with Japanese voices, you may still have the files from the English voice-over left unused. And as we said before, they take A LOT of space.

To delete them, open the Paimon menu and go to Settings > Language > Manage Voice-Over files. Delete every voiceover you’re not currently using. This will force you to download them again if you ever want to change voices but it is currently the only way to decrease the game’s overall space.

The game size is a big problem, and players have complained about the issue for a long time since they feel they’re being forbidden from enjoying the game. We can’t say that Hoyoverse doesn’t care, as the voice-over trick is advised by themselves, but it seems this is all they’ll do by now.

The exact reason why the updates are so massive is still not clear. Some attribute the size to the temporary events, while others say that the devs simply don’t care about size optimization, so take what you want as the truth.

There’s still hope for the 3.0 update size to be actually smaller if they manage to compress it somehow, but be ready for the worst as updates have only grown in size with time.

Genshin Impact is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, iOS, and Android.
