While Sumeru is the nation of Dendro where different species of flora are expected to flourish in rainforests, it is also home to creatures that thrive in harsh deserts. One of these is the Quicksand Eels.

However, before the Quicksand Eels become ready for the conditions of the dry desert, the larvae of their young are first protected by the Sand Grease Pupa. Since this type of pupa can only be found in Sumeru, it is considered a Local Specialty in this nation.

“You can only find such husks deep in the desert where the Quicksand Eels breed. The hardened shell is meant to protect the Quicksand Eels’ larval bodies until they finally acclimate to the conditions of the dry desert.”

Sand Grease Pupa locations in Genshin Impact

As mentioned previously, Sand Grease Pupa can only be found in the desert subregion of Sumeru, specifically the Desert of Hadramaveth. As of writing, no shops sell this local specialty, and no known NPC will give a couple of them for free. Therefore, if you need some, especially for ascending the 5-star Dendro character Alhaitham and/or the 5-star Pyro character Dehya, your only option is to look for them yourself.

Most of the time, one good sign that you are in the right farming location is when a creature that looks like Setekh Wenut starts attacking you. Setekh Wenut is the Normal Boss that drops Pseudo-Stamens, Alhaitham’s Character Ascension Material.

Uses of Sand Grease Pupa in Genshin Impact

As of writing, this Local Specialty from Sumeru is not known to be used for crafting or cooking. Its only purpose at the moment is as an ascension material for Alhaitham and Dehya.
