Genshin Impact ‘Katheryne’: A shocking revelation about the receptionist of the Adventurers’ Guild

Genshin Impact - Sumeru Katheryne - Strolling at the Grand Bazaar

Whenever the Traveler and Paimon visit a new region in Genshin Impact, they always find Katheryne at that particular region’s Adventurers’ Guild, saying, “Ad Astra Abyssosque!” After meeting the receptionist in Mondstand, Liyue, and Inazuma, seeing her again in the newly released Sumeru region is no surprise at all.

However, since the Traveler met ‘another’ Katheryne for the first time in Liyue, theories about her have spread online. All these receptionists have only one name; they also share the same looks! Even more interesting is that they all recognize the Traveler as if they share the same memories. With this, she was compared to Nurse Joy from the Pokémon franchise. Some theories even say that she’s some kind of robot.

While she had been the same old receptionist of the Adventurers’ Guild in the first three regions, players will notice that something is a little off with the one in Sumeru while taking the quests of Genshin Impact‘s Chapter 3: Act 2 – The Morn a Thousand Roses Brings.

NOTE that if you haven’t completed Chapter 3: Act 2 yet, you’ll surely find some spoilers ahead.

What we learned about Katheryne in Sumeru

While in Sumeru, Katheryne was spotted strolling at the Grand Bazaar. This is bizarre as this was the first time the Traveler and Paimon saw her away from her post. Before this, she could only be found behind a counter.

Later on, the Traveler and Paimon would constantly experience déjà vu. While it initially appeared that they were trapped in a time loop, it would later be revealed that, unknown to most people, those who were in Sumeru that time had been trapped in a repetitive dream harvested by the Akasha.

While this wasn’t detrimental to most, this repetition had undesirable effects on terminally ill individuals such as Dunyarzad, one of the most loyal followers of the Lesser Lord Kusanali, or the current Dendro Archon. To save her, the Dendro Archon allowed herself to be discovered by the Traveler and Paimon in the guise of Nahida. After countless tries, they would break the repetitive dream called samsara, saving Dunyarzad and everybody else.

When the Traveler and Paimon returned to Dunyarzad‘s location, they found Katheryne attending to her. Then, it was revealed that this Katheryne was not Katheryne. Instead, it was Nahida/Kusanali occupying the receptionist’s consciousness through the Akasha Terminal. The Dendro Archon did this, so she could freely walk around Sumeru. This means that the Katheryne they found at the Grand Bazaar earlier was Nahida/Kusanali.

However, that’s not the biggest revelation about Katheryne. The Dendro Archon respects the freewill of her people and would never want to occupy their consciousness. She chose to occupy Katheryne‘s consciousness among the individuals in Sumeru because, as the Dendro Archon said, the receptionist is a “bionic Snezhnayan puppet.”

With this, theories about Katheryne being some kind of robot have been confirmed. This explains why she sometimes says “error” or “rebooting.” However, her being a Snezhnayan is something that most players did not see coming!

Could this mean that the seemingly harmless Katheryne is gathering intel about the Traveler for the Fatui? Is she a puppet of Sandrone or a creation of Dottore? What role will she play in the future? In the words of the Traveler, “Just what will we come across this time?”
