Bitter Pufferfish is one of the several types of fish in Genshin Impact. As their name suggests, these fish spread bitterness literally and figuratively underwater.

While the regular Pufferfish can suck water into its body and expel it like a cannon with remarkable accuracy and force, the Bitter Pufferfish produce slower and smaller projectiles. However, the smaller size and slower speed of these water cannons do not reduce their power, as the Bitter Pufferfish have bitter pheromones inside them.

Another curious thing about these fish is that they blast each other with these water cannons during courtship!

Where to find Bitter Pufferfish

These fish can be found in several fishing spots in Mondtsadt, Liyue, Inazuma, and The Chasm: Underground Mines. Take note that in some of these fishing spots, you will also find similar-looking Pufferfish, which you should NOT confuse with Bitter Pufferfish.

How to catch Bitter Pufferfish

To catch this type of fish, you must have already unlocked the Genshin Impact Fishing System. If you already have, note that you can only catch Bitter Pufferfish using the Fake Fly Bait, which can be crafted via alchemy.

Below are some tips for fishing:

  • The Bitter Pufferfish will spawn at any in-game time. However, if you can’t find any in the specified locations, try catching the currently available fish and/or adjust the time to a couple of hours.
  • When in Inazuma, it is recommended to bring the 4-star Pyro character Thoma with you, as he gives a 20% chance of a double catch in the region.
  • After clearing a certain fishing location, note that the fish will only respawn in three whole days (real-time, NOT in-game).

What are the uses of Bitter Pufferfish

The Pufferfish can be used to purchase Ako’s Sake Vessel, a refinement material for the 4-star polearm The Catch. You can get this item from Kujirai Momiji in Inazuma.

You can also convert the Bitter Pufferfish into Fish (cooking ingredient) via cooking/processing.
