Arena is the competitive ranked mode in Fortnite, allowing players to earn points to move up the divisions to eventually get to Champion’s League where they can compete in tournaments such as FNCS.

Competitive games on the surface look like any other Fortnite match, 100 players land and the match goes on until only one player or team remains.

However, competitive Fortnite is worlds apart from regular Fortnite.

Siphon has been turned on, meaning players gain 50 health for every elimination, there is a material cap, and the storm moves from zone 5.

There is also a huge emphasis on surviving to the end game, with many players spending a bulk of the match in a box trying to minimise the action.

Because of this, it is common to see around 30-50 players in the final circles, with a huge emphasis on close quarters combats within structures.

This has led to the explosion of box fighting practice in the games’ Creative mode.

Competitive players will only thrive if their box fighting skills are high and many players have built careers on their box fighting ability.

Now, it looks like Epic Games has acknowledged the importance of box fighting and have announced Arena Box Fighting.

In a blog post they laid out what to expect from this new mode.

“It’s your time to shine! In an effort to provide new competitive experiences for Arena players, we’re testing something new with Box Fights. Starting March 23, we’re kicking off a two week test run of the community-favorite Creative game mode as a new means of earning Hype. Learn piece control, corner peeks and tracking through builds as you faceoff against players of similar Hype points.

Take note: Hype earned in this test will not affect normal Arena Hype points accrued in our core Arena offerings and will be tracked separately. This means that Hype accrued in the Arena test will not qualify you for tournaments that require a certain Arena rank.

This test will only be available for a limited time. We’ll see what works well and what doesn’t. Jump in, fight it out, and let us know what you think of the new Arena mode!”

It is interesting to note that Hype earned from this test won’t carry over to regular Arena, but it seems like if the mode is implemented permanently then it will, further emphasising the importance of box fighting.

The new mode will be added to the game tomorrow, likely around 10am EST/2pm GMT which seems to be the standard time for game additions and updates.
