After having affected the development of many titles through the last two years, COVID-19 takes its toll on another game, Final Fantasy XVI, which has been delayed for almost 6 months, according to its lead producer Naoki Yoshida.

Yoshida is also responsible for Final Fantasy XIV, which had its new expansion, Endwalker, delayed for a few months thanks to the pandemic. After its actual release, the expansion can be considered a success, since the game is currently so congested that players cannot even log in.

Through a Twitter post on XIV official page, Yoshida explained the reasons for the decision. The declaration was also made in response to Yoshida’s previous announcement of more of the game being revealed in 2021.

After stating that the game had its development affected, he elaborates: “FINAL FANTASY XVI has amassed a sizable team composed of talented creators from around the world. However, in an effort to offset the effects of COVID-19, we’ve had to decentralize that workforce by permitting staff to tackle their assignments from home”.

He continues by saying that they “have spent much of 2021 addressing this issue, and hope to see its impact to a minimum by the new year, allowing us to better focus on the tasks at hand.”.

From the recent cases of the development in XIV, which has been in Yoshida’s hands for almost 10 years, it may be safe to believe in the statement. Endwalker required 2 extra weeks of development, and the game is working perfectly (queue times and grapes apart).

Final Fantasy XVI does not have a release date yet, and it might take a little more than expected with this new delay. But, as promised in the message, we should have some “big reveals” during 2022, in the spring.
