Final Fantasy XIV introduces Data Center Travel – Everything about the system

Last Updated on: 5th July 2022, 06:13 pm

The latest patch for Final Fantasy XIV has introduced the Data Center Travel system, allowing players to visit other Data Centers and, in consequence, a lot of other servers. If you play on Crystal and your friend plays on Primal, you can finally meet up without needing to create an alt!

The system is immediately available for all players following patch 6.18, and it works similar to the World Visit system with the same restrictions and key aspects.

If you get the “Unable to submit Data Center Visit request at this time. [300]” error while trying to visit a new Data Center, the system is currently unavailable due to a request overload. Everyone’s currently trying to test the new system, so be patient and try later.

How to use the Data Center Travel system

Different from visiting another World which you can do in game by clicking on an Aetheryte, you can only visit another Data Center from the Character Selection screen. Right-click on your character and select “Visit Another Data Center”.

From there, you can select your destination. Notice that currently, you can only visit Data Centers from your own Home Data Center. In other words, NA players can only visit NA Data Centers, and so it goes for other Centers. Currently, there’s no official statement for a worldwide Data Center Visit system being available in the near future.

Here’s a list of each Home Data Center and their centers. You cannot visit Chaos if you play on Crystal, but you’re able to go to either Aether or Primal.

After choosing to make the travel, you cannot cancel the process. Even if you log out or close the game, your character will continue to be transferred to the selected Data Center, so be careful, as you can easily be locked from playing for a while.

Restrictions

Upon entering a new Data Center, your status will be defined as “Traveler” as opposed to “Wanderer”, which is reserved for simple World Visits. If you visit other Worlds often, you should be used to the restrictions.

  • Retainers are unavailable, meaning you cannot store or sell items. You can buy items at the visiting World’s market, though.
  • Linkshells (and Cross-world Linkshells), Fellowships and Free Companies’ chats are unavailable.
  • Ceremonies of Eternal Bonding (marriages) cannot be attended.
  • You cannot gather Legendary Nodes.
  • Any competitive mode (such as Triple Triad Tournaments and Crystalline Conflict ranked matches) cannot be accessed.
  • You cannot buy houses.

Aside from Cross-world Linkshells being inaccessible, these restrictions are all standard to the existing visiting systems. The most inconvenient are most certainly the Retainer and FC/LS chats aspects, which can make staying for too long frustrating, especially with long queues to return.

Why should I visit another Data Center?

Final Fantasy XIV is a very social game, and developers love to give new incentives for players to take on this game’s aspect. You can visit another Data Center in order to meet new players, interact with them, attend events and parties and even create cross-data center groups for Savages and other content.

This is the current only way you can play with friends who are set in different Data Centers without having to pay for a transfer or creating a new character. It seems small at first, but it could save people some extra bucks if they really want to play with someone.

From an economical perspective, you can also visit different Centers to buy from their own markets a feature from regular World Travel now expanded. You cannot sell on those markets, but you can make some profit by reselling some of those items in your own World.

Do notice that the system is quite recent, and it will probably be going through some difficulties, but it’s nice to know that this is finally available. Let’s hope for it to be a success.
