Final Fantasy X is one of the most beloved entries in the series, first releasing for the PlayStation 2 back in 2001. The game also paved the way for spin-off titles, with Final Fantasy X-2 following in 2003.

More recently we saw Final Fantasy XIII receive 2 spin-off titles, XIII-2 and Lightning Returns, but we unfortunately never saw a second spin-off title for Final Fantasy X be released.

But, Final Fantasy X-3 may still be a possibility, even after more than 15 years since the release of X-2. A new Famitsu interview with Tetsuya Nomura, character designer for FFX and FFX-2, states that a synopsis for a third title exists.

The synopsis, according to Nomura, is written by Kazushige Nojima, scenario writer for many of Square Enix titles, including The Compilation of Final Fantasy VII titles, the Kingdom Hearts series and, of course, Final Fantasy X and X-2.

The story supposedly takes place after the audio drama FF X  – Will – , which is present in the HD Remaster versions of Final Fantasy X/X-2, making the events of the FF X 2.5 novel also canonical. “While it’s sleeping right now, the idea exists”, says Nomura. It wouldn’t be unusual for Nomura to come back for an older title sequel. NEO: The World Ends With You is being released this month, exactly 14 years after the original game’s release.

But we may not see a new title in the world of Spire so soon. Motomu Toriyama, director of Final Fantasy X, says that “while the possibility is not zero, this is not a phase to talk about it. Our focus is to finish the 7 Remake production first”. Seeing how well received the first part of the FF7 Remake was, it seems like the best option for them.

The sequels to Final Fantasy X weren’t exactly well received. While X-2 brought some innovative gameplay aspects, the sudden change of themes (from dramatic and melancholic to a happy and cheerful game with cute girls as its focus) was not what fans were expecting. Which does not make it a bad game at all.

Also, there are the extra stories, which details the events after the secret ending of FFX-2. Both Final Fantasy X 2.5 and Will also didn’t quite match the fans’ expectations, and they aren’t so well known as X-2. We can only hope that if  Final Fantasy X-3 ever comes to life, it will be able to do justice to Tidus’ story. This is his story, in the end.
