Destiny 2: Dungeon releases to be monetized in the future

Destiny 2 has had many forms of monetization added to its structure over the years. Ever since the introduction of Eververse in the era of Rise of Iron, Bungie has set its sights on making as much money as they can from the series. We’ve come a long way since then and have seen Eververse become deeply ingrained into the game. There have been changes made as to how the game and its content have been structured to accommodate things like Eververse and the new season structure of the game with little controversy.

As of late, Bungie has made bold strides in improving the quality of its content, along with creating an overarching story that is significantly better presented in previous expansions. Dungeons, in particular, have become an anticipated piece of content that is usually introduced with a new expansion or during a specific season. The announcement of a new dungeon is practically an event in Destiny 2 and is probably one of the most popular pieces of content for a while; without a doubt, Bungie has done well to make dungeons some of the best pieces of content in the game.

Recently, community manager Cozmo has formally announced in a Reddit thread that going forward, new dungeons will only be accessible to people who own the deluxe edition of Witch Queen:

Hey everyone. We’ve seen some debate around the new dungeon content and wanted to clarify how it will be delivered next year. If you get the Digital Deluxe Edition of The Witch Queen you will receive the expansion, all four Seasons for the next year, and the two Dungeons. If you get the Standard Edition, you can still upgrade to the Deluxe Edition to get the dungeons later. We will also be offering a separate way for you to purchase the Dungeons in the future, but they will not be included in the Season passes. We will share more info on this closer to when this content is set to go live.

This newest form of monetization comes hot off of the heels of the previous major announcement of locking the Gjallarhorn behind a paywall as well. Looking through the Reddit thread shows that many Guardians are very displeased with this newest announcement. After receiving the news of the Gjallarhorn and the continued adherence to Eververse in the game, it’s no surprise that this level of displeasure is being leveled at this particular decision.

To be perfectly clear, this means that you need to shell out $80 to have the privilege of playing these new dungeons at release and that’s if you have no intention of buying the 30th Anniversary pack. This means that if you want the most complete experience in Destiny 2, which includes getting to play a new dungeon at release, you’re looking at throwing down at least $100. There’s still some time before the release of Witch Queen, so only time will tell if Bungie decides to change this decision before it goes into effect.
