What is Arena Mode in Apex Legends?

Last Updated on: 26th April 2021, 05:23 pm

Apex Legends’ Arena Mode is going to be insane and we have a brand new look at what’s in store from Respawn Entertainment. It’s time to go beyond the battle royale.

Apex Legends Arena Mode Gameplay Trailer

Get your first look at the brand new Apex Legends Arena Mode in the new trailer below:

This 3v3 mode looks like it’ll play out similarly to Valorant, Rogue Company, and CS:GO as it features a Buy Phase and an Elimination, round-based format.

To win an Arenas match, you need to win at least three rounds and be ahead of the enemy team by two points. Let’s talk about what that looks like in practice!

The easiest way is to win three rounds without dropping more than one round to your opponent. In other words, go 3-0 or 3-1 and the match is over.

Is this what Apex Legends was missing? Do you think this is the right evolution for the title? Either way… We got a new look at Valkyrie’s Tactical and Ultimate abilites as well as the Bocek Bow! It was a jam-packed trailer.

Five New Maps Are Coming

At launch, Apex Legends’ new 3v3 mode is going to feature five maps. Two of them are brand-new locations and three of them are localisations of POI’s in existing Apex Legends battle royale maps.

Party Crasher

Party Crasher takes place in a luxurious, downtown plaza where players can choose to engage on the crashed Voyage, or the opulent two-story buildings that make up the plaza. The map is varied, with each side playing to different strengths and offering a wide range of options.

The downtown plaza is well connected, pushing players to make quick decisions within its many flanking options, while the Voyage sits up high, offering great sightlines and elevated positions for those that wish to play from further distances.

Phase Runner

Phase Runner is a hidden, experimental zone at the peak of a mountain. The large center is very open, offering plenty of long sightlines to find your enemy. This contrasts the industrial points of interest, which focuses combat to be mid/close range. From either spawn, players can take the prototype phase runner to gain almost immediate access to an area and begin combat quickly. Construction wasn’t completed on the other side, so players will fight through the abandoned space that offers various engagement ranges and multiple flanking options.

Finally, we have Artillery (from Kings Canyon), Thermal Station (World’s Edge), and Golden Gardens (from Olympus). These should be familiar to a few of you.

From what we know about Apex Legends Season 9, the Legacy Update, we’re expecting this Arena Mode update to be the main focus of the next season. However, Apex Legends do like to be a bit daring and we may see this added to the game a lot sooner than that.

Respawn Entertainment changed the game with Apex Legends, that much we know is true. It introduced the “hero-based” mechanics of Overwatch and League of Legends to the Battle Royale genre with a cast of characters that will go down in history as some of the best video game personalities out there.

However, now it looks like Apex Legends are going a little bit further and several data miners have shared more information about what’s in store.

Apex Legends Arena Mode

Arena Mode is a 3v3 deathmatch that’s expected to be a permanent feature for Apex Legends going forwards. It is a bit out of Apex’s comfort zone, but with familiar locations from Kings Canyon, World’s Edge, and Olympus expected to feature… We’re sure you’ll find your footing.

Shrugtal has created this video disucssing his findings and Biast12 has shared additional information about the mode.

Biast12 believes the long-rumoured character Ash is due to appear in Arena Mode as the newest Apex Legends announcer. Many are thinking that this also confirms her as the next playable character but we’re not so sure on that one.

There’s also some voice line leaks, too!

We also know that it looks like one of the locations is going to be Aqueduct… Which isn’t Skull-Town but we’re fine.

Respawn, as you might imagine, haven’t said anything official about any of this yet so take it with a pinch of salt.

That being said, we know that they’re looking to expand beyond the Battle Royale genre and this could be the perfect way to test the waters. Design Director Jason McCord discussed the team’s goals in the first Respawn Response and confirmed that Respawn was looking to push the boundaries of Apex Legends and go beyond what people expect of a battle royale.
