Is Apex Legends on Xbox Series X? Next-gen release, leaks, and more

Apex Legends Xbox Series X S Ash

Apex Legends is a battle royale title like no other – Respawn Entertainment have really outdone themselves with their title and it continues to grow and expand with new content and updates. This hero-based shooter isn’t just a battle royale game though, it’s also an arena shooter. The creatively-named Arenas mode has added a whole new dynamic to Apex Legends and only makes it more worth your time. If you’re wondering if you can play Apex Legends on an Xbox Series X, you’re not alone. Here’s everything we know…

Is Apex Legends out for Xbox Series X?

Technically, but not exactly.

At the moment, you can play Apex Legends on an Xbox Series X (or an Xbox Series S) through backwards compatibility. This means you’ll technically be playing the Xbox One version of these games – despite the fact you’re using a new bit of tech. It might load a little quicker and it should run smoother, but it’s not going to feature any of the improvements you traditionally see with a next-gen release – things like 4K resolution and 120 FPS gameplay.

With that being said, though, it might not be long before we do see those changes being made. The Xbox Series X version of Apex Legends might be a few months away – if we’re lucky.

Shrugtal, a key Apex Legends data miner, has shared the following information with the world via his social media account:

As you can see in the images above, there appears to be a reference to both the PS5 and XB5 (which is the developer’s short-hand for the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S) in the game’s files. There’s also a reference to Apex Legends on iPhone, which is undoubtedly related to Apex Legends’ Mobile release which is currently in the beta testing phase. Of course, this isn’t solid proof that a next-gen release for Apex Legends is on the way but there’s a lot of people playing these games and the consoles themselves have been out for about a year now. Surely a native next-gen release is at least being talked about?
