Sims 5 wasn’t revealed at EA Play Live 2021, so where is it?

The Sims 5 Couch

The Sims series has remained one of EA’s top franchises for over 20 years, with the first game released back in the year 2000. Its latest entry, The Sims 4, was released in 2014, meaning it has been seven years since the game was released so we are certainly overdue a new Sims game.

Earlier this week EA hosted its EA Play Live 2021 event, a show which sees the publisher reveal many of the new games and content that it has up its sleeve. In the event, we got more information on the upcoming Battlefield 2042, as well as the reveal of Dead Space Remake, Grid Legends, and many other exciting titles. But, The Sims 5 was nowhere to be seen despite many rumours pointing to its reveal at the event.

The Sims 5 Skipped EA Play Live 2021, So Where Is It?

All signs pointed to the reveal of The Sims 5 at EA Play Live 2021. The last Sims game was released back in 2014, which means this has been the longest gap without any new entry in the series.

EA Play Live is an event that EA now hosts instead of taking part in E3, instead choosing to host the event shortly after. This is a smart move by EA and something we will likely see more of in the future, especially as most people watch the events on the internet, meaning it doesn’t matter as much where the event takes place at. It also helps keep all of the attention of EA, rather than their event just being one of many that we see over the E3 weekend.

Back in April, EA’s Chief Studio Officer Laura Miele spoke with VentureBeat, confirming that the game was in development and what we can expect from the game, including a multiplayer component and a community marketplace.

Geoff Keighley: On another note, I talked a little about The Sims – you mentioned that which is totally a great point with Maxis related games SimCity, SimFarm, even The Sims Online. It was 20 years ago, ahead of its time, with letting people build a character, build your environment. The Sims is still a vibrant franchise for EA right now. Is there sort of an opportunity to do more of there? I look at Roblox, Fortnite Creative and things like that. It seems like The Sims out of all your franchises is maybe best equipped to play in this world?

Laura Miele: Yes, a lot of fertile ground for The Sims for sure and the idea that we will build on the tools for people to play with life and the idea for people to be able to play with life together. We had The Sims Online that came out in 2002 which was around 20 years ago. We certainly were ahead of our time.

I think 20 years later we learned a lot about how players interact, what motivates players, how players can come together co-operatively and so as you imagine as we think about the next generation of The Sims it’s SUPER important for us to have the best tools, the most flexibility and for players to really expand on their creativity, remix items and objects in the world. And then to do that together – I think that’s one of our biggest opportunities with The Sims is the social connection component that we need to bring to this brand and this franchise. The team is hard at work on the next generation of that experience.

Geoff Keighley: I imagine as The Sims becoming more of a platform for creativity – it feels like an opportunity?

Laura Miele: Absolutely. And it’s us being able to create a framework and that players are actually gonna create these experiences and in the end, it’s doing it together, doing it collaboratively. They are sharing, they could create marketplaces.

When Will The Sims 5 Be Announced?

With The Sims 5 not making an appearance at EA Play Live 2021, it is likely that we will instead see the game revealed in its own event.

Back in June 2021 we saw the reveal of Battlefield 2042. With EA Play Live taking place the following month many people expected EA to wait until then to reveal the new game.

But, by doing this they were able to put all of the attention onto the new Battlefield game, with the reveal trailer currently sitting at over 17 million views.

It would make sense for EA to do the same for The Sims 5, rather than bundling it with many other games during an event.

The Sims 5 is currently rumoured to be releasing in Spring 2022, but that is currently unconfirmed at this time.

If it is correct, that would mean that we could expect to see The Sims 5 revealed over the next couple of month.
