Pyra and Mythra Broken in Smash?

Mythra Smash Ultimate

Earlier today Smash Bros director Masahiro Sakurai showed off Pyra/Mythra in staggering detail, and I for one am estatic. I’ll give you all the too long; didn’t watch of the 35 minute presentation and then give my thoughts on the two. Are Pyra and Mythra broken? Its possible, honestly.

As always, Sakurai showed his love of the source material by giving an in depth look at the new stage and the music added to Ultimate. As a fan of Xenoblade Chronicles, the Cloud Sea of Alrest is a welcome surprise in just how much is shown off. Aside from all the character cameos, seeing all the titans is neat, and Gramps moving about could make for an interesting casual stage.

Now to the meat and potatoes of the presentation, Pyra and Mythra! I am a only semi competitive fan but hoo boy these two look DUMMY good. Gotta milk those DLC dollars. Regardless, it seems like my predictions from the last Pyra/Mythra piece was a nail on the head.

Pyra deals massive damage, usually over twice than Mythra, and focuses on early kills while being notably slower. Not only is her frame data slower, but her jump height is lower and movement speed as well. Of course, Mythra is the opposite, focusing on low damage, yet quick swings that can combo and keep pressure on the opponent. She also looks to have among the faster walk and run speed in the game.

As Sakurai mentioned, one way to play the two will be to focus on accumulating damage and comboing with Mythra and then swapping to Pyra for the kill. The two can be played entirely without swapping on their own as well for fans who are particularly hard headed about it.

Now for the analysis, are Pyra and Mythra broken? Well, I’m unsure if they’ll hit the same highs on the tier list as Joker, Pikachu, and Palutena, but I foresee the joint character being high tier at a minimum. Fast characters just tend to be good in these kinds of games, and characters with more options also tend to be better. Mythra looks to be exceptionally good with her high combo potential, fast movement speed, and quick slashes.

Plus, unlike a character like Sheik, Mythra can switch on an (invincible) dime to Pyra to help offset her KO issues. Even if Pyra on her own will likely be worse than Mythra, having the burst option to switch and act out of said switch is a really good one that can offset the two’s flaws. Pyra looks to have a select few great options besides her kill moves like her Up B, which is a kill move that can be used out of shield. Her Side B, a projectile also appears to be active for nearly two whole seconds and can be thrown off-stage, allowing for ledge traps.

So are Pyra and Mythra broken? Well, its hard to tell right away, though after pro players get their hands on the two, I think we will see somewhat quickly. I definitely foresee them being on the upper end of high tier or the lower end of top tier with their incredible burst options and well, Mythra as a whole. Fast characters with range tend to be pretty good in a game like this.

Tell us what you think! I cannot wait to get my hands on this character and your boy Chris Ranta is a certified Mythra main.
