Destiny 2: Changes to PVP coming in the future

Ask any Destiny 2 Crucible player and they’ll tell you how sad they are that the PVP scene has been left in the dust for what feels like forever. No new maps, old maps getting removed, stasis woes, and the rough state of Trials has weighed heavily on Guardians that enjoy going head to head. As someone who mainly plays PVE, I haven’t felt the sting of Crucible’s neglect, but I can understand why those that focus on PVP would feel slighted after so long without any new changes.

New modes, new maps, that sort of thing is fairly common in other multiplayer games that are actively updated, and you’d think with Bungie’s prestige in regards to multiplayer that they’d be on top of Crucible changes. It’s really confusing for Bungie to not keep the focus on all aspects of their game but at the very least they’ve gotten somewhat consistent in updating all the activities in the game (except Gambit for some reason).

Slow trickle to avoid a pickle

Crucible players can start to see their upcoming stop on this incredibly long train ride, as Joe Blackburn, Assistant Game Director for Destiny 2 announced a roadmap of sorts for PVP on Twitter.

Clarifying that this is going to be ahead of a PVP showcase that’s coming sometime this month, Joe made sure to go into depth regarding what sort of plans await crucible in the far future of Destiny 2. The entire thread details the sort of things that the team is working on for Crucible, with the main theme of the thread being patience on behalf of the player base.

We believe in this investment, but it is going to take some time before you start seeing results in game.

A lot of this thread carries this sentiment, as Joe asks for everyone to be patient while they prepare to “open the faucet again” with two “vaulted” maps from Destiny 2 making a return in Season 16. Along with noting the faucet metaphor, Joe also makes sure to state that maps will be arriving consistently season to season. To round out the finer details of this thread, Joe made sure to mention three specific things that are being worked on at the moment:

1: Rift might be coming back into Destiny 2 sometime next year. As of right now, the team is looking into it.

2: In addition to Rift, multiple modes are being worked on for a 2022 release.

3: Further adjustments to the PVP ecosystem that will begin work sometime after Season 15’s Trials update.

This thread gives me hope that going forward Bungie gives equal attention to all aspects of its game, as we shouldn’t wait so long for more to do in a particular activity. I appreciate the love Bungie gives to the PVE side of the game, but I’d really like it if all aspects of Destiny 2 were given the same amount of attention. Destiny 2 is undergoing a shift into new territory right now as it experiments with new subclasses and rotating content, so equal attention to other activities is vital to a balanced ecosystem for the player base

.Multiplayer is a key component of Bungie’s identity as a game developer, so it’s important that they give a decent amount of attention to the PVP side of its money-making game. Destiny 2 has the potential to rise to true greatness with the improved content and story that has come along. Better times for the Crucible-only Guardians that exist in the game are vital to a healthy player base, as well as a happier one.
