When a video game series wants to avoid getting a little stale as more entries are added to a franchise, they try and experiment with their gameplay elements.

Sometimes, however, the changes to core gameplay or focus of the narrative are so drastic that the only thing for a dev team to do is to create an awesome spin-off series.

A spin-off game is simply a game set in the same universe or franchise that already exists but whose focus is different enough from the main series title that it becomes its own thing.

There has been instances where the spin-off is so critically acclaimed and polished that it becomes its own franchise, here are five of the best.

Megaman Zero

The Megaman games are tight and engaging platformers that helped to establish the genre for what it is today.

And while the franchise has been no stranger to experimenting with its formula, the Megaman Zero series takes all the best elements from the various titles and wraps them up into one concise package, making for one totally awesome spin-off series.

Plus, you get to play as the undeniably coolest character in the franchise, Zero.

Apex Legends

Since it’s launch in 2019 Apex Legends has been a dominant force in the battle royale field, garnering insane popularity quickly and establishing a loyal fanbase that has carried it well through the battle royale fad.

However, with its insane popularity many fans never even realized that Apex Legends is a spin-off of the sci-fi fps Titanfall. In fact, with the recent release of tie-in content to Titanfall in Apex Legends, Titanfall 2 saw an explosion of new players!

Dragon Quest Monsters

Monster collection is a style of game that’s been dominated by a select few franchises for a long time, but sometimes when a franchise wants to try something different.

From titles like Monster Hunter Riders or Bomberman: Quest, the monster collection is an element that many players find charming and engaging in a way that typical gameplay may not have been.

The Dragon Quest franchise was one such franchise that went in this direction and to say that they nailed it would be an understatement. The Dragon Quest Monsters games are a phenomenal foray into the monster collection genre that anyone can truly appreciate.

Persona

Persona is an incredibly popular series of games with plenty of spin-off games that span a wide variety of genres. Its stylish presentation has stolen the hearts of players better than any phantom thief ever could. Not to mention that according to fans, Persona invented jazz music!

It would be easy to forget that Persona itself is actually a spin-off of Shin Megami Tensei since there hasn’t been a new release in some time. Now with Shin Megami Tensei III getting an HD release, players will be reminded of part of what makes this universe so interesting.

Super Mario

Mario is without a doubt the most recognizable and well-established video-game character in the medium. The Mario Brothers franchise is one that has dipped its toe in every genre of game you could possibly think of.

It would be impossible to choose the best of the many Super Mario spin-off titles (just kidding, it’s Mario Kart Double Dash), but many forget that Super Mario itself is a spin-off.

Everyone’s favorite plumber actually made his first appearance in the arcade classic Donkey-Kong. Maybe he should be nicer to his old rival? After all, Mario would probably have to stick to his trade if it weren’t for DK. Mama mia!
