How to play Stray for free on day one

Stray, the Cyberpunk Cat exploration game, has launched today. So you might think it’s a bit soon to be talking about how you can play Stray for free, but if so, you’d be wrong.

To do so, you’ll need a Playstation. You can play Stray for Free on day one via the PS Plus featured games catalogue, and you can access PS PLUS benefits for free by signing up to Premium or Extra tiers as a new subscriber.

This allows you to play Stray for free, though only if you happen to be the owner of a Playstation system.

At the very least the details of how to do this are pretty simple. Both Extra and Premium tiers of Playstation Plus, or PS Plus, include a 1-week free trial before you actually get charged for the service as standard. Activating the service and ‘subscribing’ (You will not be charged at first) will grant you the service benefits, and in doing so, access to Stray too.

You can use this free trial to take advantage of Stray being offered as a free game via the service, allowing you to play it in full without actually paying for the game, or even for PS Plus – assuming you can complete Stray and put it down before that one-week free trial runs out, anyway.

Just make sure that you cancel your PS Plus subscription before the trial runs out. If you don’t, you will be charged for whichever plan you signed up for. You might want to set a reminder on your phone calendar or alarm system just to be safe on this one, with how popular Stray is so far, it seems likely that it’ll grab you for quite a while.

Additionally, as is noted by Eurogamer, it’s not clear whether you can simply cancel before a free trial expires and redeem another one – though that is highly unlikely, given the lengths Sony has gone previously to make sure Consumers can’t one-up them.

You can check the subscription page to see if its offered to you again after the first week, but expect the offer to be gone after the first time use. You should aim to complete Stray within that first trial week, in other words.
