Video game adaptations have always been a mixed bag, with some turning out really good, such as the Castlevania anime or The Witcher series, and some have turned out really bad such as the Super Mario Bros movie.

With the recent releases of Castlevania and The Witcher, it seems that gaming adaptation may finally be taking a step in the right direction.

A new trailer for the upcoming Mortal Kombat movie has been released and it is everything we should have got back in the 90s.

Development Hell

Believe it or not, this movie has been in development since the 1990s. After the second MK movie, Mortal Kombat: Annihilation flopped, the third movie was cancelled and ended up being stuck in limbo for over 20 years.

Over the years there has been many attempts to get it off the ground, one of the earliest memories I have of it is that it was going to focus on Reptile.

It began development again in 2001 but didn’t go anywhere, then plans in 2005 were scrapped due to hurricane Katrina.

In 2010 Warner Bros purchased the rights to Mortal Kombat and hopes for a new movie resurfaced after a short film was produced as a pitch to Warner Bros.

Now, after over 20 years the new movie is nearly here.

Release Date

It has been confirmed that Mortal Kombat will release on April 23rd in theatres and on the HBO Max streaming service. Due to the current global situation, many theatres aren’t open so HBO Max will likely be the primary way people view the movie, at least in the United States. HBO Max isn’t available outside of the US, but it can be viewed using a VPN, something many of us will be doing.

Trailer

A new trailer for Mortal Kombat has been released, showing off many of the characters and fight scenes. In the trailer we get a look at characters such as Liu Kang, Kung Lao, Sonya, Jax, Shao Kahn, Shang Tsung, Sub-Zero, Scorpion, and Kano.

Mortal Kombat 2021 Goro Jump

This movie looks like everything we’ve always wanted from a Mortal Kombat movie. It is extremely gory, and features Fatalities. We get to see how Jax loses his arms, Liu Kang’s dragon, Kano ripping a heart out and many more gory scenes. This looks like a live-action version of the video games and I am all for it.
