Fortnite Zero Build changes are going hard, as Zero Build is getting one of its biggest updates ever in Fortnite v40.40, with Epic Games completely overhauling how the mode works during Showdown Act 3. Between Pocket Items replacing the Build button, Glider Redeploy returning, and major movement changes arriving, Fortnite Zero Build could feel completely different once servers come back online.
The Fortnite v40.40 update already looks packed with content thanks to the Fortnite x Overwatch crossover, but the Zero Build overhaul may actually end up being the biggest gameplay change in the entire patch.

Fortnite Zero Build Is Losing the Build Button

The biggest Fortnite Zero Build change in Fortnite v40.40 is the complete removal of the traditional Build button. Instead, players are reportedly getting a new utility system known as Pocket Items.
Pocket Items act as unlimited-use utility abilities that work using cooldown timers instead of consumable stacks. Every player will reportedly start the match with one already equipped.
Leaked Pocket Items include:
- Shockwave Grenade
- Med Mist Grenade
- Shield Bubble
Players may also be able to swap their Pocket Item during matches using Vending Machines placed around the island.
The change feels designed to make Fortnite Zero Build more tactical while still keeping movement and utility options available throughout a match.
Fortnite Pocket Items Explained in Fortnite v40.40
Fortnite v40.40 Adds New Starting Loadouts
Another huge Fortnite Zero Build change coming in Fortnite v40.40 is the addition of starting loadouts.
Instead of dropping with absolutely nothing, players are expected to begin matches with:
- A Pistol
- Small Shield Potions
- Their Pocket Item already equipped
This should make early-game drops far less chaotic, especially when landing at contested POIs during the opening moments of a match.
Fortnite Zero Build Changes – Glider Redeploy Returns in Fortnite Zero Build
Fortnite v40.40 Fortnite Zero Build Changes is also bringing back Glider Redeploy, giving players far more mobility across the island.
Players will reportedly be able to:
- Redeploy from elevated locations
- Rotate more safely
- Cancel their glider manually after jumping from the Battle Bus
The return of Glider Redeploy feels like a major shift towards faster-paced movement in Fortnite Zero Build, especially when combined with the other mobility-focused changes arriving in the update.
Fortnite Fall Damage Is Changing
One of the most surprising Fortnite Zero Build changes involves fall damage.
According to leaks, Fortnite v40.40 may remove lethal fall damage entirely in Zero Build playlists. Instead of being eliminated instantly after a massive fall, players would reportedly survive with extremely low health.
If true, this would massively change how aggressive players can be during fights, particularly in late-game circles near elevated terrain.
Fortnite Zero Build Changes – Unlimited Sprinting Could Speed Up Matches
Fortnite Zero Build is also reportedly introducing unlimited stamina while holding a pickaxe.
As long as players have their harvesting tool equipped, stamina will no longer drain while sprinting. Once a weapon is pulled back out, normal stamina rules return.
This change appears designed to keep matches moving quickly without heavily affecting combat balance.
Overshield Now Rewards Aggressive Players
Another leaked Fortnite Zero Build change involves Overshield regeneration after eliminations.
Instead of waiting for Overshield to recharge naturally, getting eliminations could instantly restore part of your protection. This would heavily reward aggressive gameplay and help players stay alive during back-to-back fights.
Fortnite v40.40 Could Completely Change Zero Build
Fortnite Zero Build has already become one of the most popular ways to play Fortnite, and Fortnite v40.40 may end up being the update that pushes the mode even further away from traditional Battle Royale gameplay with the Fortnite Zero Build Changes.
With Pocket Items, movement changes, Overwatch-themed content, and new gameplay systems all arriving together, Fortnite Zero Build could feel almost like a brand-new mode once servers return.
