XSET PureR “It’s really hard to learn or improve in ranked”

Heading into Valorant Last Chance Qualifiers, it felt like XSET was on the verge of something big. In their last tournament before LCQ in August, XSET had just fallen short of a spot in Berlin after losing to Team Envy at the Stage 3 Challengers Playoffs.

Now with Sentinels and Team Envy out of the picture, it felt like now was as good of a time as any for XSET to show the community what they could really do.

Unfortunately, after several weeks of competition (thanks to a two-week delay that sent the tournament online) XSET’s LCQ journey ended with a 2-0 loss at the hands of Cloud9 Blue.

Despite the loss, XSET’s Bryce “PureR” Lovell sat down with The Click after the game to talk about the match, his team’s LCQ experience, and his thoughts on Valorant third-party tournaments.

XSET PureR’s thoughts on match against Cloud9 Blue

Thank you so much for taking the time to join me for this interview, especially after your tough 2-0 loss to Cloud9 Blue. Can you just walk us through your thoughts on how this match went?

XSET PureR: We just didn’t adapt fast enough to that bind pick we played really good yesterday but we just didn’t adapt fast enough to their playstyle but ascent we just lost steam towards the end there when it was like 12-9 or 12-10 we couldn’t close it out it was really close but we couldn’t make it work in the end.

XSET’s Last Chance Qualifier Experience

Gotcha. Now obviously XSET was one of the four teams who played on Day One of the LCQ in-person. What was the experience going from preparing for that in-person environment to having to switch gears and prepare for an online event?

XSET PureR: Yeah, I think it sucks having to re-prepare after not seeing what some of these other teams did in the lower brackets since those top four teams in the upper bracket had to play.

But, it gave us a bit more time to work on what we were doing in the background we didn’t really do anything differently we just got more reps in on these different maps and different agents.

It sucks that we weren’t able to finish out the LAN but I think we are a lot more comfortable here at the XSET house we’re at home plus we have a bit better equipment as well, I think we had a better time playing it at home in my opinion.

The Offseason and XSET PureR’s thought on Third-Party tournaments

Now that you and your team are eliminated from the LCQ you guys are done with the VCT season for the year. What is next for yourself and the rest of the XSET guys in the next couple of months?

XSET PureR: I think we will collectively take a quick break, enjoy the holidays and come back in grind time for next year.

We have some time until then but I think we will probably participate in some of these Nerd Street tournaments and LANs that they are putting together, It’ll be fun to watch and fun to play in I think a lot of those teams that didn’t make LCQ like the Tier-2 and top Tier 1 teams are gonna play in that as well so it’ll be fun.

Speaking of the Nerd Street Gamers Tournaments, obviously, they have been a big part in helping these teams that might not be vying for spots in international LANs to remain active during the long lull periods we have seen this year. Do you think that Riot should be working to promote more third-party tournaments from organizations such as ESL to promote a stronger Valorant Esports infrastructure?

XSET PureR: I do think so because it is a little interesting having quite a big break between challengers or masters so I think they could promote more companies like Nerd Street Gamers to host tournaments or a company like ESL.

Or they could do some sort of pro-ten-man system because I think ranked is in a really strange spot it’s really hard to learn or improve in ranked in my opinion as a pro since you aren’t going to be playing the best of the best all the time so it’s really hard to learn.

So I really think they should promote that or at least have another company come in and maybe do some ten-mans or some different tournaments more often.

The Valorant NA Last Chance Qualifiers will wrap up on Sunday with the grand finals starting at 3:00 PM EST on the Valorant Twitch Channel.
