Who Saw This Coming?

Coming into the 2021 World Championship, FunPlus Phoenix were the favourites to take second place in Group A, over Rogue and Cloud9. The 2019 champions did not start well, however, not seeming to have a good read on the meta, and could not win a game today. Tian, the 2019 MVP, did not have a good day today, misplaying multiple times and not looking comfortable on any of the champions that he played. The offseason for FPX could be interesting, especially to see what happens to the jungle role.

North America Moves On

Coming into the day, Cloud9 was 0-3 in their group. They won two of the three games that they played today, they forced a tiebreaker against the winner of the game between Rogue and FunPlus Phoenix. After Rogue beat FPX, the stage was set. North American had never won a tiebreaker in the Group Stage, let alone against Europe. In a fifty-four minute game, Cloud9 did it. Nobody expected them to make it out of the “Group of Death”, but they did it.
