2022 League of Legends Worlds Groups day one recap

Fans cheering in New York City during Worlds groups day one

It’s time. The 2022 League of Legends Worlds groups day one has arrived, which means that all the top seeds from every region are ready to play. Today we saw the likes of T1, G2, JDG, and Gen.G take the stage.

Who is going to start the stage on the right foot? Will North America pick up a win on the first day across three teams, or will they fall on their face today? How many wins will Korea and China get? Who looks strong, and who needs time to ramp up?

The race to San Francisco starts today, with each game counting more than the last one. If a team can start off hot today, that’s the best foot they can put forward. If a team doesn’t start off well, they still have a chance, and fans should not be too worried just yet.

Coming into the tournament, it was expected that the teams from North America would get at least one win on the day. Unfortunately, they fell short of their goal, with not one win on the books and some games looking worse than others.

The team that was expected to get the win for sure was 100 Thieves, and they fell short of the goal by a mile. Going against CTBC Flying Oysters, they were outclassed from the start. They could not team fight at the same level as their opponents and shot themselves in the foot multiple times because of their draft.

Cloud9, the first-seeded North American team, fared a bit better, but not by much. Going against Fnatic, the team that was seeded into their group from the play-ins stage, they were slow to get going, to say the least. There was a lack of damage on their team, they were not able to play to their comp’s strong suits, and never got anything going against Fnatic.

In terms of Evil Geniuses, they had the hardest opponents. They had to go against the LPL representative in their group, JDG Intel Esports Club. For a while, they were still showing some fight, taking team fights and winning them, but in the process were falling further and further behind their opponents. They got wiped at the key fight around the baron, and the game quickly finished after that.

If North American teams want to perform at a higher level, they need to step it up quickly. One problem that the analyst desk recognized quickly was that there seemed to be a meta that had formed for the North American teams from scrims but was not one that would work on stage against their opponents.

Hopefully, Worlds groups day one for the teams was a day of experimentation and something that is not going to doom the region this year. We won’t know until tomorrow when teams will take the stage again if that is the case.
