2022 League of Legends Worlds Groups day five recap

A view of the fans from on stage during Worlds Groups day five

With Worlds groups day five arriving, it means that it’s the start of the second round robin that makes up the group stage. Today we will find out who will make it to the quarterfinals from Group A, and who will be making an early exit and heading back home.

For Fnatic, T1, and Edward Gaming Hycan, they all started the day tied in first place with a record of two wins and one loss. Out of this three-way tie, only two can make it to the quarterfinals. Will it be the defending World Champions and T1 making it out as predicted, or can Fnatic make some noise and disrupt everything?

For the team in last place, Cloud9 still has a slim chance to make it out of the group stage and into the quarterfinals, but that means getting three wins in a row. Can they get the first three wins for North America in the group stage, or will they fail to take a tier-two tower, something that was pointed out on Reddit a couple of days ago?

Heading into Worlds groups day five, there is the possibility of tiebreakers to decide the final seating, but will it come to that? It’s time to find out who will make it to the next stage in New York City, and who is going home.

2022 Worlds Groups day five results:

  • Cloud9 > Fnatic
  • Fnatic < T1
  • Edward Gaming Hycan > Cloud9
  • Fnatic < Edward Gaming Hycan
  • T1 > Cloud9
  • Edward Gaming Hycan < T1

With the lights shut off and players back in their hotels, the dust has settled for group A. The two teams that are going to be moving on to the quarterfinals are going to be T1 in first place and Edward Gaming Hycan in second place. Fnatic and Cloud9, who finished third and fourth respectively, are the two teams from the group heading home.

Fnatic and Cloud9 started the day off, and it was the first win of the stage for North America. Cloud9 played a scaling composition and played the comp to its strength and beat the European third seed. This loss seemed to throw Fnatic off for the rest of the day, as they lost every single game that they played afterward, finishing the stage with a whimper rather than a roar.

Cloud9 did not continue to play scaling comps, instead abandoning the idea right away and instead playing early game-focused comps against T1 and Edward Gaming Hycan, and just got beat by both teams easily. They did manage to take tier-two towers, but they did not win every game today, meaning that the first-seed team from the LCS is going back to Los Angeles.

Edward Gaming Hycan had the second-best day as a team. The only game that they dropped was the one against T1 that would decide who would get first place in the group. Outside of that, they looked clean, but not up to the level that they were at last year when they won the whole thing. For fans of the team, hopefully, they are able to step it up when the quarterfinals come around.

T1, the team that everyone knows as the team that Faker plays on, finished the day with a perfect record, and first place to show for it. With their win, they are not going to be drawn into a matchup for quarterfinals, instead having a team that they chose for their opponent. For Faker and his team, this is the best step possible toward winning the 2022 World Championship.
