Thanos Rising #1-5 Review

Thanos Rising review Marvel Comics Mad Titan

Thanos may have been the big bad for the MCU, bringing him the fame he is known for now, but for comic fans the wielder of The Infinity Gauntlet has been a long standing threat for Marvel’s heroes. However in our Thanos Rising review we’ll go over what shows the darkness that ripened Thanos into the planet conqueror he is know throughout the cosmos to be.

What started my interest in the Mad Titan Thanos was his obsession with Death. Death always being around him, you’d think this makes sense but Thanos Rising shows the true obsession with Death are how it all started for Thanos.

Young Thanos Rising

Primarily, the story jumps between the current and the past Thanos. His past self, although a genius as a child, he was disregarded by his peers and others causing him to have malicious thoughts. His future self is seen reflecting on those years and comparing it to his actions today.

This type of storytelling for such a largely known villain is an interesting way of gong about things, adding different emotional themes to be explored within the character. As a younger version of Thanos is teased by his peers for not participating in scientific activities such as dissecting wildlife from his planet.

Thanos Rising show us that he was teased about his genetic mutation more than anything else. The mutation affecting the color of Thanos’ skin that causes him to be purple toned is from what his planet calls Deviant Syndrome.

Upon seeing her child’s mutation Thanos’ mother, Sui-San, attempts to kill him due to this mutation and the belief from the people of Titan that the color purple signifies death.

We see that Thanos actually cares for life, but even after breaking through and actually participating in these activities there are problems. After an accident with some classmates, Thanos is accused of being responsible for events that took place after which completely changes his perspective on everything.

Eventually Thanos fled Titan, becoming a pirate and working and traveling the galaxy but one day everything changed for him and he returned home but it wasn’t for any particular reason and certainly not a positive one when a reason arose.

When he was younger Thanos would have a friend visit him, a somewhat dark friend but it was his friend and maybe it was from being alone that he never questioned this friend.

He didn’t receive much positive attention in school so without much question Thanos would engage with this friend. However her sudden appearances and dark attitude led Thanos down darker and darker paths. Even when Thanos was alone, he would hear her voice telling him what he needed to do. What he needed to do to be loved, and not just loved, but by her.

Before Thanos conquered planet after planet and eliminated species after species, he started right when all of his pain started, Titan. Without remorse or without any regret Thanos did nothing but conquer and slaughter in the name of earning the love he wanted. Endlessly searching but at a crossroads, Thanos is once again setting foot on his home planet.

Without going into further detail about this relationship or this woman mentioned above in our Thanos Rising review, I will say that this is the most important aspect of Thanos’ beginning and was absolutely enticing to read and even with an incredibly rounded story it still left me wanting more.

Thanos Rising final thoughts

Overall, Thanos Rising shows Thanos in an entirely new, semi-sympathetic side of things and while he’s still the villain I’m a huge fan of this type of storyline. Giving us true insight into the secluded, otherwise unknown parts and origins of comic characters is a level of depth and exploration that I appreciate to the greatest extent.

I honestly read comics specifically for storylines like this, the less conventional and deeper informative story that helps you understand the character, especially the darkest aspects.

If you like anything about the character of Thanos or to get any sort of in depth look at the Mad Titan then I’d say this is well worth the read. Origin stories are one thing but Thanos Rising led me down the dark road Thanos has taken to become to monster he is feared as today. Hopefully our Thanos RIsing review helped you decide if you want to dive into the early life of Thanos and discover the dark origins of the Mad TItan.
