Evangelion 3.0+1.0 is finally arriving on a streaming service

Neon Genesis Evangelion is one of my favorite anime of all time (I’ll have a piece on this someday, be patient) and I’ve been waiting for ages for the final entry in its Rebuild series of movies. Rebuild of Evangelion has been creator Hideaki Anno’s remake series of films that are a re-do of the original anime.

The original Neon Genesis Evangelion was one of anime’s most polarizing series to ever exist, as it alienated both casual and hardcore anime viewers. It took the tropes of traditional Mecha shows and reframed them through a more believable lens (for better or worse). This lead to a tone that didn’t gel with everyone that watched the anime, especially with the ending of the original anime leaving many questions unanswered.

Because of the polarizing nature of the original series, Hideaki Anno had expressed interest in remaking the series as a series of films, which he finally did with the release of Evangelion 1.0.

On July 2nd, 2021, Studio Khara announced on its website that the latest and final release in the Rebuild series, Evangelion 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon a Time, would finally be releasing on Amazon Prime Video on August 13th. According to the full statement on the Amazon UK page, the other releases in the Rebuild series are also going to be released sometime.

While there isn’t a set date for the other films, we can definitely presume that they’ll either be released alongside the newest film or sometime after the new movie’s release. The international release of this film is exciting as it’s been out in Japan since March of this year, and we’ve all been waiting with bated breath for the final Rebuild film.

This is (not) a drill

The exciting thing about this release is the culmination of several years of waiting after the release of Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo in 2012 in Japan. Think about it. You’re hot off the heels of 3.0 and you saw that amazing preview trailer at the end that got you pumped for what the next movie was gonna be.

Then all of a sudden there’s nothing from Studio Khara for years, while more and more Eva merch gets pushed out the whole while. After being pressed on it for years, Anno finally confirmed that work on the final film resumed after the release of Shin Godzilla in 2016. The fact that the film resumed production and finally released in 2021 is astounding, because one could be forgiven for thinking that the final entry in the Rebuild series would never arrive.

As someone who has championed this series for years, I’m truly happy that Hideaki Anno has finally put his biggest series to bed with this final movie. If you’re even remotely interested in the series, the whole thing (original movies and all) is on Netflix with a brand new dub.

Grab some Tang, some friends, and a bunch of snacks and enjoy the emotional, confusing experience that is Neon Genesis Evangelion.
