Hunter x Hunter returns in November after 4 years

After 4 years of a continuous break and a mysterious Twitter account with daily sketches from the characters and scenarios, Hunter x Hunter returns in November. No, we’re not talking about the anime – this is about the manga, which has been on hold for almost 4 years due to author Yoshihiro Togashi’s health problems.

Togashi is known for two facts: First is being the creator of both Yu Yu Hakusho and Hunter x Hunter, the latter being often regarded as one of the best Shonen pieces of the current age. The other is this same masterpiece’s biggest problem: Togashi takes a lot of breaks between chapters, with the last one being released back in December 2018.

This is due to health issues around his back, which forces him to be bedridden and unable to draw new chapters. Fans are always worried about his health, but can’t pass up the opportunity to meme the situation. Some examples are the infamous nickname ‘Hiatus x Hiatus’ or claims of Togashi being busy playing Dragon Quest in his very organized room.

Hunter x Hunter returns in November

The announcement was made by Shonen Jump through their official Twitter account, in which they announced that Volume 37 for Hunter x Hunter will be released on November 4 in Japan. As the series currently doesn’t have enough chapters to make a new volume, this can only mean that it’s finally coming back.

Fans could already expect this coming anytime. Back in May, an account with a seemly random username claimed to be Yoshihiro Togashi, something that was later confirmed. The first tweet from it has received over 1,5 million likes and more than 500 thousand retweets.

Using a translator, we can see that his bio reads “It is official. I will mainly tell you the progress of the manuscript”. And that’s what he’s been doing daily, giving us a small peek at one of his newly drawn pages.

Those drawings were usually raw manuscripts from which his assistants would help him to finish, as his excruciating back pains prevent him from doing it himself. Anyone uninformed could be forgiven for believing that these are simply random scribbles, but progress was being made here.

Togashi’s assistant previously revealed on Twitter that the series will be back when they have completed 10 new chapters. That means we’ll have at least two months and a half of chapters when Hunter x Hunter returns to its weekly publication on Shonen Jump.

But that doesn’t mean that we have ONLY 10 chapters. The strategy could be to have some chapters done while he slowly prepares to get back to his weekly schedule. While a new hiatus should probably be expected anytime soon, we might see some interesting development in the Dark Continent arc.

Is the anime coming back?

Hunter x Hunter has two anime adaptations. The first one from 1999 is a lot darker and explicit, following the manga until the end of the Greed Island arc. The other version is the 2011 one, which covered everything up to the end of the Chimera Ants arc, and is regarded as the definitive way to watch the series.

But even if the manga for Hunter x Hunter returns by now, it wouldn’t mean the return of the anime. The current arc does contain some interesting events and could be enough for a season or two, but that’s probably not what we should expect.

Both adaptations are known for having a ton of episodes. The 2011 version goes up to 148! Even if Madhouse (the responsible studio) would be chosen to pick it up again, they would probably wait for some more chapters to pile up to give them some more material to work from. And given we all know that Togashi could simply stop drawing anytime to take care of his health, it wouldn’t be safe to bet on an anime return so soon.

On the upside, we’ll get more than 10 chapters and some conclusions in the next few months.
